Rebuilding Sri Lanka: A Journey in Photographs
It’s been almost three years since the tsunami struck the coast of Sri Lanka. Since that time, International Medical Corps has been working to help those who lost their homes, their livelihoods, and their loved ones get back on their feet again. Within days of the disaster, IMC was on the ground in Eastern Sri Lanka, providing emergency medical care and counseling to thousands of survivors.
As communities began to stabilize, IMC shifted its focus to developing long-term solutions to address the population’s needs. We constructed new health care clinics in areas where facilities were destroyed. We trained public health workers to identify people struggling with mental health disorders, and to provide them with basic treatment. We created vocational training programs to help those who lost jobs, houses and possessions recoup their losses. And we set up mobile clinics to ensure that displaced Sri Lankans living in volatile areas affected by the ongoing civil war have safe access to medical care.
As IMC wraps up its programs in Sri Lanka, we look back on the various ways that we helped Sri Lankans navigate their turbulent lives post-tsunami, and provided them with the tools to get back on their feet again.
